  4. Somehow I know feel like migrating to Sydney, Australia...I wonder why???? ;)

Oh, and by the way...I would never dare to teach English in an English speaking country. I neither have the skills nor the confidence for that.

  5. Oh dun be silly Ms Mom .... you wouldn't be teaching ppl who already speak English ... just all the imports [we DO have quite a few *smile*] who can't, but need to. U know, street signs, public notices, civil laws etc.

  6. Five reasons to like Sweden:
    1) The Swedes
    2) The social system
    3) One of the few countries that, well, looks a bit like penis on the map
    5) The Swedes

  10. :) well...according to many recent studies the Swedish school system is failing. Students are getting worse and worse results especially in mathematichs and science subjects.

And the subject I teach - Swedish for adult immigrants- are heavily critisized. People love to hate on us...

  11. "I teach Swedish for adult immigrants ....."

    Immigrants!?!?!

I thought the subject of this post is about emigration? [Oh the subtleties of English!]

Or is it more about fresh fruit, higher pay, lower taxes and no snow .... hang on, that's only four!!

    Oh yeah; and sunshine!!

    *hurls a shaft of sunbeams*

  12. I want to emigrate but others immigrate to this country. Despite awful weather and bad fruit and veggies. I guess when it comes down to it most would rather stand the cold than war and oppression.

  13. Aaah ... indeed! Anything for a safe home.

I can't even begin to imagine the emotional turmoil one must experience to leave ones 'roots'!

I often think of this because Australia is the archetypal 'land of immigrants'.

Tell me Ms Mom, from your experience, do the immigrants to Sweden come with a 'start afresh' attitude, or do they drag their baggage along with them, living in cultural pockets, resisting assimilation?

  14. Do immigrants come to Sweden with a start afresh attitude...hmmmm...tough question...
How people act/react in a new country depends on sooooooooo many factors. Some get scared and get more religious and or ethnic oriented than they where in their homecountry...some come with a start afresh attitude and after a while their dreams are broken...some are like asfalt flowers - nothing can hold them down...and some makes it their priority to detach themselves from their own cultural pockets. We are all different...and one thing is sure...we are TREATED different...being white and English speaking opens a lot of doors. Rasicm and discrimintaion exist in all counrties and in all forms...alos amongst immigrants themselves. "Loveimmigrants" have very little in common with refugees. And people hate being looked at as part of a group. I do too. I hate the "Swedish dumb blonde girl" - image that many people have...or the notion that Sweden is the land of free sex. We are all predjudice in some way...a little or a lot. The important thing is to beware of your own thoughts and try to analyse why you feel or think as you do. And of course people drag their baggage along...some baggage they cant get rid of even if they want to. I try to think like this...if I where in the same postion...what would I do...often the answer is: I would do exactly the same thing as people I might be irritated at...
